CHINA
The earliest sonorous stones in China date from the Shang Dynasty : 1600 to 1046BC. Unfortunately very few specimens from this period have been preserved, due to the command of Emperor Che Huang-Ti in 212BC that all books, music and instruments should be destroyed. The Chinese people took an exceptional interest in music, demonstrated by the large number of musical instruments they possess. In one of his works, the philosopher Confucius refers to over 100 different instruments. Sonorous percussion instruments were important to the Chinese, and no doubt there were many types of ideophones within this number, including sonorous stones.
